Eric Sardinas May 18 2006 by Ramblin' Rosie
Eric Sardinas and Big Motor came to town Thursday, May 18, at Shank Hall. We haven't seen him in Milwaukee since he
last appeared at the now defunct [and much missed] Sandee's National Pastime, an intimate blues club formerly
located on National Avenue. It has been way too long.
I want new adjectives to describe the experience. Sandee's had a very small stage area that naturally contained some of the exuberance this band exhibits. They gave use a thrilling show in spite of the limitations. Although Shank Hall's stage isn't huge, there was plenty of room for them to break out and let us see their moves last night.
And move they did! Especially Eric! His exotic persona served to amplify the driving beat of their complex style. No trite, repetitive runs and licks here. Originality reigned as accomplished, professional musicians made music that was bigger than life itself. Of course, to the delight of the audience, there were moments of humor and patter woven throughout,as well as. Eric's signature finale.
If you don't know this band's work and you like your music hard-driving and penetrating, to suffuse your very soul; and, if you missed the Shank Hall performance, don't let the next opportunity pass you by.
