BluesBaby's Favorite Artists Near and Far - Albert Collins
Albert Collins - also known as "The Master of the Telecaster", "The Houston Twister", and "The Iceman" was born in Leona Texas on October 1, 1932 and died in Las Vegas November 24, 1993. An electrifying legend of the blues, he was famous for "walking the crowd", winning both a W C Handy and a Grammy Award.
He played both piano and guitar and built his first guitar himself. Inspired by T-Bone Walker, Lightnin' Hopkins, and Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown he favored plucking the strings rather than using a pick. His distinctive sound was combination of electric guitar with open tuning in D-minor or E-minor, and an attack that can only be described as percussive. His early recordings are on Peacock, Kangaroo, and Duke moving to other regional recordings before moving to Imperial Records and finally Alligator Records.
